Nick Besse
Where are you originally from?: I was born and raised in Scotts Valley, CA, near Santa Cruz and have lived in California most of my life.
Where do you live now?: Castro Valley, CA, near Oakland
What types of bikes do you ride/race?: I primarily race road bikes, 2023 will be my 10th road season since I started riding! Recently, I've been getting into the gravel scene and am hoping to do some cyclocross races come fall/winter.
Favorite type of cow: All cows are my favorite. But my most favorite are Highland cows. How can they see?!
Favorite cow fact: When I was a kid, my great-uncle was a dairy farmer. One day, he decided it was a good idea to see if I could ride one of his calves. Naturally, it bucked and took off. That's how I caused a Bavarian town to shut down for a few hours while everyone hunted down the calf. I also know a German song about cows in pajamas, getting sunburns, and high heels - I will be teaching this to everyone willing to learn.
Favorite cow pun: Anything from the Far Side. "Cow Philosophy: And, as you travel life's highway, don't forget to stop and eat the roses."
How are you going to make hay this year?: I am setting ambitious goals and trying new races I wouldn't have done otherwise. Specifically, I am looking to go sub-12hr at Unbound this year and traveling to Arizona for the Valley of the Sun stage race in February. Additionally, I am hoping to climb Mt Whitney, attempting the low-to-high challenge, and entering the lottery for Half-Dome permits this year to broaden my horizons beyond cycling.
What does inclusivity mean to you?: Acknowledging that everyone experiences the world differently and comes from different backgrounds, we can work to make cycling more open and accessible to everyone. As an individual, I can be more inclusive by accepting that not everyone has the same goals, work to make them feel welcome, and provide support where I can.
How will you be larking this year?: I’ll be 3D printing some armor and sw-oh, LARKing. This year is about doing events and going on adventures that bring me joy and sharing that with as many friends who are willing to come along as possible! I am taking more time to be outdoors in anyway I can and dragging along anyone willing to make the trek with me.
Thinking about our value, Kit Matters: socks over or under leg warmers?: Socks under and I will drop anyone with socks over cause they’re losing watts.
